During pregnancy, a high percentage of women experience spinal discomfort and symptoms, which interfere with daily activities and the enjoyment of this special time. Often there are pre-existing spinal problems, which are aggravated with the postural changes and increased spinal loading as the baby grows. Regular Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can prevent or relieve spinal aches and pains, headaches, indigestion, cramps, nausea and many other symptoms. Pelvic imbalance is a common problem, which can affect the shape of the uterus during pregnancy. There are strong ligaments, which attach to the uterus to anchor and suspend it. If the pelvis is twisted or out of alignment then the ligaments can pull or twist the uterus and cause constraint. This can restrict the space for the growing baby and prevent the baby getting in to the optimal birthing position. This is a leading cause of vertebral subluxation to the baby’s spine (joint dysfunction affecting the babies nervous system). Improper positioning of the baby can slow down labour and add more pain and distress to both the mother and baby. Studies show that Chiropractic care reduces labour time. Seeing a Chiropractor during pregnancy helps to maintain pelvic alignment and balance to optimise the birth process and allow the intelligence of the body to function at the highest possible level. Chiropractic adjustments in pregnancy are gentle, safe and effective in helping to give you and your baby a more comfortable pregnancy and minimises physical and emotional trauma. At Lotus, we are one of the few Chiropractic Practices in Australia offering Holistic and Active Birthing Workshops. Our Chiropractors, together with a hospital midwife, run specialised one-day workshops for expectant couples. Our goal is to instil knowledge and confidence in the birthing team to help them respect and facilitate the natural process of birth. Couples learn to work as a team and reduce the fear associated with giving birth, by learning strategies for natural pain relief. This reduces the need for intervention and minimises physical and mental trauma on both the mother and baby. We use special foam cushions, so most of our pregnant mums can lie on their tummy to be adjusted right up until the birth.
